A traffic police spokesman said that the Srinagar-Leh highway was closed due to heavy snowfall at Zojila and other places. He said no vehicle was allowed from Drass or Srinagar today. Official sources said snowfall was experienced at Gumri, Machoi, Zojila and Meenamarg on the highway. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is responsible for the maintnance of the highway, which remained closed for six winter months due to 20 to 30 feet of snowfall. The authorities have already stocked essential commodities, including rice, atta, sugar, kerosene oil, gas cylinders and medicine in the Ladakh region for winter. The Jammu and Kashmir government has approached the Centre for operating helicopter service to areas which remained cut off with district headquarters due to snowfall during winter in the region. The 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was, however, open for traffic despite rains at several places. However, a tube of the Jawahar tunnel remained closed today for repair purpose. Another tube will remain open, officials said.
