Two of family killed, 2 injured in army firing
Hundreds protest; army starts probe

Srinagar, Oct 04 : A large number of people including women and children staged a protest demonstration against the killing of two persons of a family and injuries to two others allegedly due to unprovoked firing by the security forces in Kokernag area of Anantnag district, early this morning.
The army has admitted killing of the two civilians but termed it as a case of mistaken identity. As per a defence spokesman an inquiry in the incident has been started.
Giving details of the incident, official sources told News Agency of Kashmir that a family was probably returning home at village Ahlan Gadola in Kokernag area of Anantnag district around midnight, last. When the family reached outside their village an ambush party of the army opened fire killing two of them on the spot, while injuring two others critically.
The deceased have been identified as eighteen years old Muhammad Ashraf Naikoo and his elder sister Misra (25), both children of Hashim Ali Naikoo. The injured were as Lateefa, daughter-in law of Hashim, and his son-in-law Abdul Karim.
Deputy Inspector General of Police, South Kashmir, HK Lohia confirmed that the villages were killed in the army firing and assured that a through probe would be conducted in the incident.
"As per the reports, two civilians have been killed and two other wounded in a firing incident. The villagers have alleged that they were killed in army firing. We have registered a case and are investigating," Deputy Inspector General of Police, Hemant Lohia told News Agency of Kashmir, over phone.
The defence spokesman also confirmed the incident and said that the army's commander of the area had gone to the village to verify the allegation. “We are looking into the allegations”, he added.
Meanwhile, when the news of the incident spread in the adjoining villages like wild fire and hundreds of people thronged the village since early this morning. The villagers staged a strong protest demonstration and raised anti-India and pro-freedom slogans.
Reports from the area revealed that the police and local administration had to face tough time to deal with the situation as the people were furious over the matter. The situation in the area remained tense, till the last report came in.
