8 dead in Poonch road mishap, 17 critical, airlifted to Jammu
Chib’s swift action saves precious lives

Jammu, Nov 10: In yet another gruesome road mishap in the region, at least eight persons have been reported killed and over 30 others injured as passenger bus rolled down in a gorge in Bandi Chechian area of Poonch district. 17 of the injured persons have been reported in critical condition.
Soon after coming to know about the accident, the Medical Education Minister Rajinder Singh Chib flew to Poonch and got the critically injured passengers airlifted to Jammu. Minister’s swift action helped save some lives as the district hospital in Poonch was not sufficiently equipped to handle the critically injured passengers as many of them were required to put on life saving systems and drugs.
This is third major road accident in a month in Jammu region taking the mishap toll to 40. The other two recent accidents were in Kathua and Kishtwar districts.
Reports reaching here said that at least seven people were killed and 30 injured, 10 critically, when a minibus they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell into a gorge in Poonch district. Another succumbed to the injuries later, said the sources.
“An overloaded minibus, which was on its way from village Nuna Bandi to Poonch town skidded off the road near Bandi Chachian at around 1215 hrs and fell into a deep gorge when the driver failed to negotiate a sharp turn,’’ police sources said.
On receiving information about the incident, police parties, army and the locals rushed to the spot and started rescue operation and shifted the injured to the district hospital.
The Minister for Medical Education, Technical Education, Youth Services and Sports RS Chib accompanied by MLA, Aijaz Ahmed Jan today flew to Bandi Chechian, Poonch to personally monitor the relief operation for the bus accident victims.
All the 17 critically injured persons were shifted to Medical College Hospital Jammu by helicopter besides 19 passengers with minor injuries were shifted in District Hospital.
Later, the Minister and MLA visited the District Hospital Poonch to enquire about the condition of the injured persons. All the 36 injured persons were paid Rs. 5,000 each out of Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
On reaching Jammu, the Minister alongwith Jan visited Jammu Medical College Hospital and directed the hospital administration to provide specialized treatment to the injured.
Meanwhile, two persons accompanying a marriage party have been reported killed in a village in Akhnoor late tonight.
