| Disruptions on NH, many roads closed | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 10 : Traffic on 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was disrupted for several hours while the 434-km- long Srinagar-Leh national highway remained closed due to snowfall. Border towns of Keran, Karnah, Machil, Tangdhar and Teetwal also remained cut off from the rest of the state due to closure of Razdan and Sadhna passes following heavy snowfall. A traffic police official said that traffic on the highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was suspended last night due to snowfall at Jawahar tunnel. He said due to slippery road conditions some trucks were stranded near the tunnel. However, this morning, the trucks were removed with the help of cranes and traffic restored on the highway. Both way traffic was plying on the highway, he said adding vehicles which were stopped at different places last night were allowed to leave towards their respective destinations this morning. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has made all arrangements to meet any challenge of snowfall to keep the highway open. People in the Kashmir valley are mostly dependant on imports of essential commodities through the road link. The Srinagar-Leh highway also remained closed due to heavy snowfall between Sonmarg-Zojila-Drass and Kargil. Kargil and Drass, the second coldest place in the world after Siberia, also experienced heaviest snowfall of the season, leading to closure of the road. Several far flung and remote areas were also closed with Kargil and Drass towns due to snowfall. Two major passes in north Kashmir--Sadhna and Razdan--are also closed due to heavy snowfall. Several dozen villages besides half a dozen towns, including Keran, Karnah, Tanghdar, Teetwal and Neelu remained cut off from rest of the state due to closure of these passes. The authorities have already stored essentials, including rice, atta, kerosene oil, gas cylinders and sugar in these areas which remained cut off during winter months.
