Zafar Choudhary, Avtar Bhat recipients of Premnath Bhat journalist award 2009

Jammu, Nov 11: The prominent journalist of the region, Zafar Choudhary executive editor of ‘Early Times’ and editor of ‘Epilogue’ a monthly English periodical and Avtar Bhat, special correspondent of daily ‘Excelsior’ were awarded this year’s Premnath Bhat memorial journalist award at a function held here today.
Minister for medical education, youth services and sports RS Chib, who was the chief guest on the occasion gave away the awards, and presented shawls etc the awardees.
Welcoming the guests and on other invitees at the function. Senior journalist, Yash Bhasin, trustee Prem Nath Memorial Trust and Convener of the award giving committee stated that Prem Nath Memorial Amateur Journalists award was instituted jointly by English Magazine Jammu Panorama, edited and published by him and Prem Nath Bhat Memorial Trust in 1990. He said till 2004 giving away of awards of some distinguished non-professional journalist was an annual feature, and 100 eminent non-professional journalist have been conferred the awards during these 16 years. With the publication of Jammu Panorama seized in 2005, the awards could not be conferred. But the same has been revived this year with little deviation by selecting two professional journalists for the awards.
Paying tributes to Late Bhat, a leading advocate of Anantnag in Kashmir valley who pursued Journalism as a hobby, with a mission, Bhasin said that articles on socio-political subjects, mainly concerning J&K besides on spiritualism and religious philosophy of Hindus, Muslims and other faiths by Prem Nath Bhat were published in various newspaper and periodicals in the state and outside. He was assassinated by the religious bigots as his write ups on communal harmony, peaceful co-existence and commitment to nationalism were unpalatable to the enemies of peace. He added that Bhat was highly respected, admired and held in high esteem not only by members of his own community but also by a large number of Muslims.
