| Shock over Poonch tragedy | | Govt asked to improve condition of roads, Strongly implement traffic safety measures | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 11: While expressing shock over the Poonch bus tragedy in which eight passengers were killed and 30 others injured on Tuesday, various organizations and individuals have called upon the government to improve road conditions and strongly implement the traffic safety norms. Director Institute of Jammu and Kashmir Affairs (IJKA) and Padam Bhushan awardee Balraj Puri has expressed grief and shock over another bus accident in Poonch, killing 8 passengers and injuring 39 on Tuesday. In his press statement Balraj Puri who also hold the chair of Convenor PUCL, urged the government to realize urgency of improving road connectivity and better policing to check overloading in Jammu region, particularly its hilly areas. He also demanded opening of trauma centres on these roads. The unending series of accidents, he said, reflected callous attitude of the government to human lives. Expressing grave concern over Poonch accident Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today blamed State Government for the mishap and demanded action against the erring officers besides Rs 5.0 lakh for kin of the victims In a joint statement issued here today, PDP demanded exgratia of Rs 5 lakh each for the family members of those who have lost their lives and free treatment for the injured. Party also demanded government jobs for atleast one family members of the deceased passengers because people lost their lives due to negligence of the authorities. Blaming authorities for the tragic accident, PDP leaders said that those at the helm of the affairs have not learnt any lesson from the erstwhile Doda district where hundreds of people have lost their lives in accident. PDP leaders said that bad road conditions, over loading and over speeding were the main causes of such accident and Government should take some steps to avoid re-occurance of such accidents in future. Demanding deployment of mini buses in the remotest areas of Poonch and Rajouri districts, PDP leaders regretted that except promises coalition regime has done nothing to solve day today problems of the common masses. Signatory of the state included party general secretary Thakur Balbir Singh, MLA Mendhar, Sardar Rafiq Hussain Khan, MLA Darhal, Choudhary Zulfikar, district president Poonch Hamid Manhas, secretary of the party Falail Singh, Imtiyaz Bandey, Raja Gurmeet Singh and others. A Condolence meeting of Pradesh Congress Committee was held today at PCC HQ., Shaheedi Chowk, Jammu to express shock and grief over the Poonch Mini Bus tragedy. The leaders has conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed for peace to the departed souls. The leaders asked the concerned government agencies to investigate into the cause of accident and also to provide immediate medical help to the surviving passengers. The families of those killed or injured need to be provided immediate ex-gratia relief. The government must take concrete steps to check frequent road accidents in this hilly region causing number of casualties. Prominent among those who were present in the condolence meeting are Dharam Pal Sharma, Amrit Malhotra-MLC, Thakur Hari Singh, S. Amolak Singh, Vinod Sharma, S. Parduman Singh, Baldev Sharma, Raval Mattoo, Bhagwan Singh and others. Meanwhile, Chairman Jammu Kashmir Social and Peace Front (JKSPF) S Devinder Singh Behal has also expressed shock over the tragic road accident at Nuna Bandi in Poonch in which eight dead person died while thirty nine others were injured. Behal stressed for immediate relief to their families and also said for better treatment for injured person. JKSPF members and Gen. Secy. Shaikh Sajjed visited GMC Hospital and urged for better treatment to be given to injured persons. They also appealed to Red Cross to provide best treatment to the injured. JKSPF has conveyed his condolence to bereaved families and prayed for external peace to the departed soul and speed recovery to the injured
