| Set up Urdu University in state without delay: Shohab | | Govt. committed to promote official language: Gani | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 11 -Urdu Academy to be set in Jammu and Kashmir without further delay and Urdu be made compulsory subject up to 10th level and teachers to be appointed in the schools and colleges of the state.
This view was expressed by several speakers while speaking in ‘Yuma-e-Urdu’ celebrations organized by Department of Urdu, University of Jammu in connection with the Birth anniversary of reputed freedom fighter, Urdu writer and first education minister of Independent India Moulana Abul Kalam Azad here today.
The program was held in Jammu University which was presided over by Prof Varun Sahni, Vice Chancellor University of Jammu. Minister for Higher Education Abdul Gani Malik was the Chief Guest while Ved Bahsin the eminent journalist and Chairman Kashmir Times Group of Publication was the Guest of Honour. Prof. K.H. Siddqui, Prof. Shohab Inayat Malik, H.O.D Urdu were also present in the presidium.
In his welcome address, the HOD Urdu Prof Shohab Inayat Malik demanded setting of Urdu Academy in the state. He informed that in 1996, the then Chief Minister had announced Urdu Academy for the state and accordingly a blue print was submitted to the then Education minister but till date nothing has been done in this regard.
Prof Malik further said that Urdu was granted official status by Maharaja Pratap Singh and it is the duty of the Government to restore the lost glory of Urdu language.
Abdul Gani Malik in his speech lauded the efforts of Urdu department for promoting the language and congratulated HOD Urdu Prof Malik for organizing the Urdu celebration in a befitting manner. Gani assured the audience that Government is committed to promote its official language and survey would be made of those areas where Urdu is not being taught. ‘Government will soon appoint Urdu teachers in the Schools and in higher education too, process of appointing Urdu teachers is on and soon the PSC is going to conduct the interview for the post of college lecturers”, he announced. Regarding the demand of Urdu academy in the state, the Minister said that he would discuss the matter with the Chief Minister and soon after a discussion would be made in this regard.
Paying rich tributes to Mulana Abdul Kalam Azad, Education Minister described him as a multidimensional personality having a secular bent of mind.
While speaking at the function the reputed Urdu writer and well known lawyer Sham Sunder Anand Leher said that Urdu is the language which had linked the three religion of the state.
In his address Prof Varun Sahni too discussed the role of Urdu language in the freedom struggle of India. He said that linking Urdu language to a particular religion is not true. Urdu had produced stalwarts like Prem Chand, Krishan Chander, Rajender Singh Bedi and others who belong to different religions. He further said that Urdu is the 3rd biggest spoken language in the world and congratulated the Urdu loving people on the occasion of world Urdu Day. He assured the gathering that University of Jammu would do its best for promoting the state’s official language.
Earlier Prof. M.A Wani presented a brief paper on the present position of Urdu language in the state.
A galaxy of intellectuals, Urdu writers, students, teachers, scholars, respectable citizens attended today's function.
