Rahul’s talent big hit in J&K, Attracts NC MLA among 550 youths
11/12/2009 12:32:14 AM
Early Times,
NEW DELHI, NOV 11: Congress general-secretary Mr Rahul Gandhi’s move to take the youth from the Kashmir Valley as well as Jammu on board through his talent search programme may take a few more days to select new stewards for Youth Congress in the State. The incumbents selected through a well laid down process will be entrusted to build the organisational edifice for Youth Congress in the State.
The idea behind the move is to provide a platform to a whole generation against indifference to public life, disgruntlement, and unnecessarily or otherwise brooding over things or state of affairs in what is thought to be a troubled State at the borders of the country with a violent history posing serious problems.
Stating this, the general-secretary of All-India Youth Congress Committee (AIYCC), Mr Nadeem Javed, told Early Times on his return to Delhi from Jammu on Wednesday that about 550 youngsters, both men and women, took the interview at Srinagar and Jammu to answer to the queries posed to them by a five-member talent selectors’ committee.
Besides Mr Javed, the committee included former Central Minister, Mr Jagdish Tytler; former President of National Students Union of India (NSUI), Mr Salem Ahmed; president of AIYCC and Lok Sabha Member from Sirsa, Mr Ashok Tanwar; and coordinator of talent hunt, Mr Sanjay Bose.
“Despite Monday morning’s chill about 200 youth, including women called on the visiting committee at Srinagar. The next day the response was impressive at Jammu too where about 350 yongmen and women met the committee members,” said Mr Javed here on Wednesday.
Asked as to how many of those who appeared for interview at Jammu and Srinagar were selected, Mr Javed said that the process of collating marks would take a few more days. “The first top 10 performers based on their scores would later be called by Mr Rahul Gandhi who holds the charge of Youth Congress as AICC general-secretary to his New Delhi office or residence for nearly a day-long brainstorming session. This might lead to finding a suitable person to head the State unit of Youth Congress. Promising persons would also be sent to head district unit of the youth organisation of Congress Party, said Mr Javed, adding that some of the talented persons might be put in the policy making body of the organisation.
He said that the response to an open and transparent talent selection has been so good that often members of other parties, including a young MLA of National Conference too appeared for the interview. Not just collegiate but also professionals like young executives from companies like Vodafone and ICICI Bank too appeared in the interviews both at Srinagar as well as Jammu. They included both young women and men, he added.
Sources say that close aides like Wharton Business School-trained Mr Kanishka Singh and young Lok Sabha member and the last scion of former Estate of Alwar in Rajasthan, Mr Jitendra Singh, are assisting Mr Rahul Gandhi in his nearly countrywide talent hunt and revamp of Youth Congress which is currently on in 23 States.
Yet, according to the sources, the two-day just concluded exercise at Srinagar and Jammu at the initiative of the top-Congress leadership is significant in the sense that this is meant to offer a political outlet to an otherwise embattled and heavily militarised State that Jammu and Kashmir has turned out to be for past two decades or so.
