| Gupta demands extension of 73rd, 74th Constitution amendments to J&K | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 12- The leader of the BJP Legislators Party, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta has impressed upon the State Government to take early steps for extending the 73rd and 74th amendments of the Indian Constitution to this State before going for Panchayat and Civic elections so as to make the exercise really democratic to empower these institutions. Commenting upon the statements of the Chief Minister and other Government leaders ensuring early elections to the basic democracies, Prof. Gupta said that it was strange that the ruling leaders of the Congress as also their allies in the National Conference are still shirking to get extended the 73rd and 74th amendments of the Indian Constitution to Jammu and Kashmir even after the expiry of about 25 years. It was strange that even after the repeated suggestions by the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh as also the recommendations of the high level expert committee appointed by the Farooq Govt. itself in 1998, which was headed by Godbole, the coalition Government’s of the State during all these years have been evading the issue of empowering the basic democracies, he said and alleged that having the diseased mind the ruling leaders of the State are still trying to distance J&K from rest of the country and thus making the whole democratic system a mockery. He asked Congress leaders to explain as what was the hitch in extending the said amendments to this State, especially when the Prime Minister himself had asked for this important measure.
