| Police foil SRTC employees’ march to secretariat, 20 injured, 30 arrested | | |

Jammu, Nov 12: Scores of striking SRTC employees received critical injuries in Jammu on Thursday as police burst tear gas shells and resorted to lathi charge in a bid to prevent them from coming closer to the civil secretariat complex.
The SRTC employees reached Shalimar chowk in large numbers as per their schedule programme and started shouting slogans in support of their demands.
The SRTC employees had announced protest march towards the civil secretariat at the end of the three day ultimatum to the state government to address their demands.
However,the peaceful demonstration by the SRTC employees took an ugly turn when few agitated SRTC employees made a desperate bid to cross the barricades erected by police force to prevent movement of agitators.
Along with lathi charge police lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the SRTC employees on the Shalimar road.several passers by were also became target of police lathicharge and received injuries. Shopkeepers in the area downed their shutters as tension prevailed in the area. Vehicular movement and public transport buses was also stopped for some time.
Condemning the police action on the peaceful demonstration striking SRTC employees said, the state government is only issuing misleading statements and showing little interest and practically doing nothing to address the demands raised by them.
The employees from all three regions of the state had earlier reached Jammu well in advance to participate in the protest march to the civil secretariat demanding implementation of the sixth pay commission recommendations and release of their pending salaries for the last six months.
The SRTC employees are on strike for last 79 days and the entire fleet of over 800 vehicles is stranded in the workshops of the corporation across the state. After some time when SRTC employees reached Bikram Chowk office and started holding protest demonstrations outside the office heavy deployment of police force once again cane charged SRTC employees inviting lot of criticism. Meanwhile the SRTC employees have decided to further intensify their agitation in the days to come.
