| Minister allays fears of citizens on city flyovers | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 13: This might take the next generation to see but government claims to have some ambitious plans for decongesting the city of temples with a series of new flyovers. However, some city residents have their doubts as they allege that some vested interests are playing role to get the projects altered. These apprehensions were today brought to notice of Minister of State for Planning and Development Dr Manohar Lal by a delegation of prominent citizens, mostly owing allegiance to the Congress party. The Minister had a detailed meeting with the delegation in presence of Principal Secretary Planning BB Vyas and allayed fears of the citizens. Dr Manohar told the delegation that with a view to minimize the frequent traffic jams, the government is contemplating to construct a series of flyovers at an estimated cost of Rs. 7600 crore. These flyovers will be from Bikram Chowk to Panama Chowk, Bikram Chowk to Satwari and Jewel to Canal road. The deputation urged for undertaking widening of city roads, particularly from Jewel to Amphalla upto Janipur High Court complex and Jewel to Canal road, so that people get a sigh of relief from the frequent traffic jams. The Minister assured the deputation that government is already aware of the hardships being faced by the people due to frequent traffic snarls in Jammu city and is exploring every possibility to construct the flyovers at vulnerable points besides widening of roads from Jewel to Amphalla upto Janipur High Court complex. He further assured them that memorandum of demands submitted by them would be given due consideration. He also said that the problems of the people due to traffic congestion would be brought to the notice of the Chief Minister for urgent attention and a meeting will be convened in this regard, next week. Principal Secretary, Planning, Mr. B. B. Vyas, who was also present in the meeting, assured that after the proposal for construction of flyovers is through, immediate funds would be arranged for the purpose. With regard to widening of roads, he said works have already been taken up for widening of roads at different points. He further said that road from Surinsar-Chenani to Sudhmahadev would be completed within six months so that tourists flow to Surinsar and Sudhmahdev remains unaffected. He further said that one of the ERA projects, which was going to expire in 2010, has been extended upto 2011 and case will be taken up with the centre so that Rs. 1600 crore provided for the project could be utilized in full during the extended period. He said till date only Rs. 800 crore have been expended on the said project. The deputation also sought early instructions to the R&B department for repairing the dug up roads for laying water pipes, cables etc so that people do not face any inconvenience. The deputation included former Minister Yogesh Sawhney, historian Prof Hari Om and former Bar president Baldev Singh Slathia.
