| ‘23 daily wagers dying annually on PDD duty’ | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 13: Nearly 23 linemen and other staffers of the Power Development Department are said to be dying every year while performing their official duties but the government has been accused of being insensitive to their plight. Citing this and many other reasons, the association of daily wagers of the PDD has threatened to go on strike. The All Jammu and Kashmir Daily Wager Union (PDD) today said 350 daily wagers have lost their lives while performing duties since 1994 but the state government has not yet come with the concrete solution to their 'long pending' demands. ‘’In the year 1994, the state government recruited daily wagers in the Power Development Department (PDD) on the assurance of regularising them soon and since then, 350 daily wagers had died on duty but still, our fate is hanging in between,’’ Tarun Gupta, president, All Jammu and Kashmir Daily Wager Union (PDD) told reporters at a press conference here this afternoon. Gupta said 350 daily wagers died across the state including 113 only in Jammu province while being on duties, adding, ‘’besides deaths, 465 daily wagers, have also got physically disabled either due to electric shocks or accidentally.’’ The Union's president said November 22 has been set as a deadline for the state government to come out with conclusion to their grievances. ‘’If the government fails to meet our genuine demands, there will be an indefinite strike from November 23 and the power supply in the city will also remain affected,’’ Mr Gupta said. The leader, however, said 3,200 employees of PDD are eligible for regularisation while the government should also release pending wages of the employees, who have not been paid for the last four years.
