Kashmir reeling under intense cold wave
11/13/2009 11:21:06 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 13: People in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region continued to shiver due to severe cold as the minimum temperature hovered between minus 0.5 degree and minus 15 degrees Celsius.
Official sources said almost all ponds, small streams and nullahs were frozen in the areas where the temperature was minus 5 degrees.
They said Drass, the coldest place in the world after Siberia, recorded minus 15 degrees this morning.
All the water bodies were frozen in Drass sector too, disrupting normal life.
However, temperature at the upper reaches, including near the Line of Control (LoC) was predicted to be between minus 18 to minus 25 degrees during night.
But, they said, the troops remained deployed on the LoC to foil any attempt by militants to infiltrate into this. It was after the 1999 intrusion by Pakistani intruders, that troops remain deployed at the LoC throughout the year despite temperatures dipping to minus 40 degrees during winters.
Troops, guarding the border, have been provided clothes and other essentials to meet the weather challenge.
A weather office spokesman said that Kargil recorded minus 9.4 degrees, affecting normal life.
Most water bodies were frozen in Kargil and other areas also.
Water supply in Drass, Kargil and other areas, supplied through taps, has also been stopped by the authorities. People are being supplied water through tankers by the Water Works Department (WWD), he said to avoid damage to underground water pipes.
Leh was also cold with minimum dipping to about minus 11 degrees this morning, he said.
Sources said almost all water bodies, including ponds, nullahas and small streams, in Leh were frozen due to extreme cold while the situation was worse in the upper reaches and far-flung areas.
