| MLA makes point for self respect, first | | | SANDEEP BHAT Jammu, Nov 15: While the Peoples Democratic Party today sought to introduce its self rule proposal for debate in the civil society in Jammu, its only two elected legislators from the region walked out of the seminar hall in an apparent message that self respect comes first. Sardar Rafiq Hussain Khan (from Mendhar) and Choudhary Zulfikar Ali (from Darhal), PDP’s only two MLAs from Jammu visibly found themselves out of place at party’s civil society seminar on self rule when they found themselves sitting among the audience while the new entrants taking seats at the podium. They waited for few minutes till Muzaffar Hussain Baig started his lecture on self rule. As Baig began his speech by naming AK Sawhney, who joined the party few months ago, and some others including Sardar Rangil Singh sitting at the stage, the MLAs Khan and Choudhary quietly left the venue. When followed by some of their colleagues, they made it known that the whole affairs was being conducted as a corporation and not the party. When contacted later in evening, Baig feigned about the issue. “I don’t know about this”, Baig told Early Times when asked about walkout of MLAs. Sardar Rafiq Khan, however, did not mince any words in expressing his displeasure. Hhe told Early Times, “self Rule is as important as one’s self respect”. He added, “I am one of the only two elected representatives of the party from Jammu region but I was relegated to oblivion. What self rule can we achieve if we don’t have self respect”. When contacted, Khan’s colleague, Choudhary Zulfikar refused to comment. Seeking to play it down, MLC Sayed Asghar said, “this was just an interaction with civil society and the protocols don’t matter in these kinds of programmes. This was not a legislature where proper protocol was needed. Even, I being a (MLC) was not seated at dias.”
