| Cut off Ladakh to get chopper service | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 17 : The Jammu and Kashmir government is taking all necessary measures to ensure helicopter service to areas in the Ladakh region which remain cut-off from the rest of the state during winter months due to snowfall.
Official sources said here today Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had issued orders for taking all necessary steps to start helicopter services to Kargil and other areas which remained cut off during winter months.
The orders from Mr Omar came after it was reported that Zojila pass on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway will now remain closed during winter months as continuance of traffic on this route can prove risky because of slippery road conditions due to snowfall and minus temperature.
The highway was to close on November one for winter months.
However, after dry weather condition, it was decided to allow traffic on the life line to Ladakh region till weather permited.
But on November 9, heavy snowfall forced the authorities to suspend the traffic on the highway. However, stranded vehicles on both sides of the Zojila pass were helped to proceed towards their respective destinations after the snow was removed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway.
The BEACON chief engineer said yesterday that because of slippery road conditions and fresh snowfall, the highway had been closed and will reopen only next year.
The authorities have already decided to construct a tunnel at Zojila to make it an all-weather road as despite snowfall, the highway remains almost open from Drass- Kargil to Leh during winter.
The Divisional Administration has already stocked essential commodities in different areas of Ladakh region which remained cut- off during winter.
