| Geelani back in custody | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 17 : Chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani was arrested again here this afternoon. Mr Geelani was taken into preventive custody and lodged in police station Shergrahi, official sources said.
A spokesman of the HC Aiyaz Akbar said that Mr Geelani was scheduled to address doctors and students of Government Medical Colelge (GMC) at Karan Nagar this afternoon.
He said Mr Geelani, who addressed students at Kashmir University (KU) recently, was getting invitations from different educational institutions to visit them.
Today he was scheduled to address in the GMC but was arrested near the main gate of the college, Aiyaz said.
Earlier, addressing a press conference Hurriyat chairman said his campaign against the alleged illegal occupation of lakhs of kanals of land by the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir will remain peaceful despite provocation by the authorities who are conducting raids on the separatist leaders and other workers' houses.
He said the authorities are also detaining the leaders and workers to prevent them from attending rallies being organised in different parts of the state against illegal occupation of land.
Mr Geelani gave details how he was arrested and prevented from attending public rallies at Kulgam and Kupwara.
He announced that next Friday a rally would be organised at Pulwama in south Kashmir against the land occupation. A strike would also be observed in Pulwama only, he said.
Mr Geelani has announced that district wise strikes and rallies would be held on Fridays against land occupation.
So far Shopian, Baramulla, Kulgam and Kupwara districts observed strikes and held demonstrations on previous Fridays since October 23 |
