| Command Hospital Udhampur gives new hope to cancer patients | | | Early Times Report Udhampur, Nov 17: Opening a new chapter in the history of cancer treatment, Command Hospital (Northern Comand), Udhampur successfully performed the first Bone Marrow Transplant on 29 Oct 2009 in a 50 year old serving soldier suffering from Multiple Myeloma. The patient was treated with chemotherapy at Command Hospital (Northern Command) and, after the disease was brought under control, autologous stem cell transplant was performed.
In a pioneering venture a team of medical personnel led by Lt Col (Dr) Tarun Verma, Clinical Haematologist performed the transplant procedure in collaboration with the Regional Cancer Centre and Department of Transfusion Medicine of Govt Medical College Jammu. Maj General Harinder Singh, Commandant, Command Hospital (Northern Command ensured that all the necessary drugs and equipment were procured on priority to perform this life saving procedure. The procedure was overseen by Col Prashant Bharadwaj, Cardiologist and Head of Department of Medicine. The patient engrafted successfully and is now convalescing in Command Hospital (Northern Command). More transplants, both autologous and allogenic are planned in future.
Bone marrow transplantation consists of destroying the diseased bone marrow with chemotherapy and replacing it with normally functioning marrow cells. It is a highly specialised procedure, performed in a handful of transplant centres in the country which has now been made available in Jammu and Kashmir. A Bone Marrow Transplant unit requires facilities for barrier nursing, storage and irradiation of various blood components besides specially trained staff. Despite the lack of infrastructure the transplant team consisting of doctors and paramedical staff from various specialities were able to plan and execute this procedure successfully.
Command Hospital (Northern Command), Udhampur is the only tertiary care centre in Northern Command primarily treating surgical and medical cases evacuated from frontline areas of Jammu and Kashmir. Now in another landmark venture it has become the only centre capable of performing Bone Marrow Transplant in this part of the country. |
