| 9,933 cases settled through Lok Adalats in J&K | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 19 : Satisfied with the speedy result of Lok Adalats, which has settled 9,933 cases of different nature, the Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to establish permanent offices of Legal Services Authority (LSA) in Srinagar and Jammu. According to Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Justice Barin Ghosh, Lok Adalats, organised in different parts of the state, have settled 9933 cases of various natures. The Lok Adalats also awarded compensation of Rs 10.84 crore which is a very healthy sign. However, he sought intervention of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Law and Justice Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar in making the institution of Lok Adalats one of the best in the country. Official sources said Mr Abdullah, lauding the role of Lok Adalats in the justice delivery system particularly delivering justice to poor and down trodden sections of the society, said the government would make every effort to strengthen the infrastructure of judiciary in the state.
He said Lok Adalats satisfy the essence of famous quotations ''justice delayed is justice denied and justice should not only be done but seen to be done'' as these Adalats provide for quick justice delivery system in an amicable manner. Responding to the suggestions put forth by the Chief Justice regarding strengthening of Lok Adalats and institutions of mobile Lok Adalats, the Chief Minister said same would be considered by his government on top priority. He said there is need to widen the legal services network beyond the present Tehsil level so that people get justice at their doorsteps. Th Chief Minister said the government shall seriously put into practice the suggestions put forth by Justice N A Kakroo which will help in the advancement of the system of Lok Adalats. The government shall set up permanent offices of Legal Services Authorities at Jammu and Srinagar at the earliest possible opportunity. Justice Kakroo highlighted the difficulties by the LSA in view of inadequate infrastructure.
