| Attempt to gherao J&K CMs residence by SRTC employees foiled | | SRTC employees stage protest demonstration | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 19 : A bid to gherao residence of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah by agitating employees of State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) was foiled by the police here. Awaiting final settlement of their long pending demands including salary hike as per the sixth pay commission recommendations, the agitating employees of the State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) on Thursday staged protest demonstration near Shahidi chowk, steps away from the official residence of the chief minister Omar Abdullah and reminded him of their unfulfilled promises. On reaching near Residency Road, the agitating employees were not allowed to proceed towards the residence of the Chief Minister as the police foiled their attempt to gherao his residence. The employees resented the decision of the state government to keep them at bay in the ongoing consultation process going on between the chief minister, CAPD and Transport Minister Qamar Ali Akhoon and senior officers of the state government. After the dharna was lifted the Kashmir based representatives of the SRTC employees ridiculed constitution of various committees which they alleged have failed to resolve the issue and have only added to the confusion. The spokesman of the SRTC workers union said if the state government still failed to deliver on assurances the employees would resort to unique form of protests which included ‘rail rako’ and blocking traffic on the national highway before proceeding to New Delhi to apprise the union government about their plight and the treatment meted out to them by the state government. In the meantime Rajiv Mahajan President Shri Ram Sena while addressing a meeting of Sena activists appealed the State Government to solve the problems and demands of SRTC workers on priority basis. He said the Sena fully supports the ongoing agitation of the SRTC workers who are fighting for their rights. The protesting employees had deferred the unique protest, initially proposed for Tuesday last, after assurances by the government to the union on November 15. We will carry on with the protest and may even block the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway or even rail track,'' the leader said adding that a list of employees is also being finalised to move to the New Delhi for celebration of Eid outside Parliament or Lal Quila in New Delhi. The employees are on strike since August 26 and all the corporation fleet, including buses and trucks, had remained grounded at different places for past 86-days.
