Modernization of colleges on anvil: Malik

Jammu, Nov 19- Emphasizing on quality infrastructure for Colleges, Minister for Higher Education, Labour and Employment, Abdul Gani Malik has stressed on adopting pro-active approach in designing college buildings with modern facilities for the students.

The Minister said this, while reviewing the overall functioning of the Government College of Engineering and Technology (GCET) in an officers meeting, here today.

Among others, Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education, Pramod Jain, Director Colleges, Dr. N.D. Wani, Principals of GCET, Commerce and Science Colleges besides faculty members of GCET attended the meeting.

The Minister directed Principal GCET to submit the project proposal on design of college building along with better facilities and accommodation for the upcoming faculties of the college. He exhorted for expediting the ongoing construction work of the new campus of the college.

It was informed that at present Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Science and Administrative departments are functioning in old GCET campus and they shall be shifted to New Campus, Chak Balwal by the end of February 2010.

The Minister said that an amount of Rs.16.50 lakh have already been released as land compensation and construction of boundary wall of new campus. He also directed the Principal to go for outsourcing to ensure proper facilities in the hostel and mess for the students of the institute.

Malik also said that the seating capacity of the classrooms will be doubled by next academic session from 30 to 60 per class.

Responding the demands of the faculty, the Minister assured that their demands will be taken up with the concerned authorities.

The Minister was also informed that three engineering departments of Civil, Computer and Electronics and Communications have already been shifted and are fully functional at the new campus.

Later, Malik went round the college and inspected workshop of Mechanical Engineering faculty, laboratories and other sections of the institution.
