Foreign tourists increased in J&K in 2008: Selja

NEW DELHI, Nov 20: There was an increase in the number of foreign tourist to Jammu and Kashmir in 2008 over 2007, the Lok Sabha was informed today.
However, the number of domestic tourist declined by 3.5 per cent during the same period, Minister of State for Tourism Sultan Ahmed told the House in a written reply.
While the number of foreign tourist rose from 0.53 lakh in 2007 to 0.55 lakh in 2008, the number of domestic tourist declined from 79.15 lakh in 2007 to 76.39 lakh in 2008.
Mr Ahmed said the Jammu and Kashmir Government has taken several measures to increase inflow of both domestic and foreign tourists in the State which include the State Tourism Department enhancing its presence in a large number of events, travel fairs, conferences and conventions held within and outside the country.
Further, the literatures about the State have been printed in various languages and distributed within and outside the country.
Rigorous publicity campaign is being undertaken through both the print as well as electronic media, inviting visitors to the State.
Various fairs and festivals have been organised in all the three regions of the State showcasing tourism, art and culture.
These include Kashmir snow festival, Tulip festival, Second Gulmarg Global Durbey Championship that have been organized during the current year.
