| Bhalla lists slum dwellers welfare as major priority | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, NOV 22: Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation Mr. Raman Bhalla has said that the Coalition Government is committed to uplift the socio-economic condition of the people especially urban poors and slum dwellers in the state by developing colonies in Sunjwan, Bhagwati Nagar, Rajiv Nagar and Qasim Nagar under BSUP scheme. The Minister said this while laying the foundation stone of approach steps and retaining wall at Qasim Nagar in Bagh-e-Bahu being completed at cost of Rs. 5.6 lakh by Jammu Municipal Corporation. Mr. Bhalla said that on the completion of 256 flats in Sunjwan each comprising of two bed-rooms, kitchen, and bathroom, the urban poors and slum dwellers would be accommodated there. He asked the JDA and JMC authorities to remove encroachments from government land. He asked the illegal occupants to vacate government land voluntarily otherwise face action. For proper rehabilitation of slum dwellers-cum-leprosy sufferers of Rajiv Nagar and Bhagwati Nagar, the Minister said that the Government has planned to construct 608 flats in Sunjwan at a cost of Rs. 14.245 crore, 36 flats in Bhagwati Nagar at cost of Rs. 143.51 besides upgradation of 881 slum units in 21 different locations of Jammu city at cost of Rs. 3341.11 lakh adding that the works are under progress. Mr. Bhalla asked the executing agency SUIDA to speedily complete the ongoing construction works of the dwelling units including road connectivity at Sunjawan coming up at a cost of Rs. 14.245 crore by January 2010 under BSUP scheme on the identified 22.83 kanals of land by using quality material. He said that the government has resolved to create durable assets in the state. The Minister said that a comprehensive plan has been drawn for developing Jammu city as a model city through landscaping, beautification and anti-polythene drive. He said that government is working on a plan to decongest the city and create green atmosphere at all crowded sites. Earlier, the Minister visited Kissana Mohalla in Bithandi to assess the problems being faced by the people of the area including construction of culvert over nallah and deep drain from Sunjwan to Kissana Mohalla, installation of poles in left out areas of Kissana and Sunjwan, adequate drinking water facilities in Nikki and Gazia mohallas besides construction of link from Sunjwan to Nakki mohalla. |
