Dy CM does firefighting as Azad loyalist chides NC
11/23/2009 12:04:19 AM

ZAFAR CHOUDHARY
Jammu, Nov 22: It was a mega show of strength on podium by pro-Ghulam Nabi Azad lobby of the Congress but many ‘hurt hearts’ could not just resist taking potshots at the ruling coalition partner National Conference.
As chief guest on the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand though stressed for harmony in the coalition, but a diehard loyalist of Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Minister Abdul Ghani Vakil got into his fiery element against Omar as he would run verbally amuck after Muftis two years back. Tara Chand was being seen getting uncomfortable as Vakil sprayed salvos.
“Congress is not here to sit as a mute spectator to rising corruption in the state”, said Vakil asking Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to ensure transparency in the administration. Dwelling at length on ‘unbridled’ corruption, for which he did not cite any specific cases, Vakil went on chide the big brother in ruling coalition on employment promises. He, however, pledged support of Congress “if Chief Minister took initiatives on these two key issues”.
The pro-Azad gathering of minds had almost half a dozen staunch loyalists –interestingly almost all those who lost the 2008 assembly elections and stood in the middle of nowhere after Azad took center-stage in Delhi and his bête noire Saifuddin Soz called the shots in Jammu and Kashmir. Notable among the participants were Gulchain Singh Charak, Jugal Kishore, Gharu and Abdul Hamid. Works Minister GM Saroori also attended.
To water down the angry comments of Vakil, the Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand did a massive task attempting to build up opinion for a greater synergy between Congress and the National Conference. Tara Chand is though a declared loyalist of Azad but he has always been seen taking care with the choice of words –whether they are for the rival lobby of Soz or the coalition partner National Conference.
Tara Chand said that we (Congress people) have to united and work together to strengthen the Congress-National Conference alliance at gross root level in the state. He said that there are some elements who do not want the development and peaceful atmosphere for the state thus we have to fight against their ill designs.
He asked for full cooperation of the people in implementation of various developmental and welfare programmes launched by the coalition throughout the State. He said that under the dynamic leadership of UPA Chairperson Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, the Omar led coalition government will unitedly work for the democratic setup.
Saroori reiterated the commitment of the coalition to implement all developmental and welfare programmes launched for the benefit of people in letter and spirit. He said that besides road network in every nook and corner of the State, the facility of potable water, electricity, better medicare, education, sanitation etc. would be made available to the people especially in hilly far-flung and border areas of the State. Mr. Saroori sought public cooperation in the implementation of NERAGA, IAY and other schemes to benefit the people belonging to schedule tribe, schedule caste and other weaker sections of the society.
