| WDC launches 10-day exhibition | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, NOVEMBER 23- Minister for Social Welfare, Ms Sakina Itoo has called upon women to come forward and avail the schemes of Women Development Corporation (WDC) for opening income generating units. She said that this would improve their socio-economic status and make them self reliant. The beneficiaries participating in the exhibition belonged to Rajouri, Poonch, Kishtwar, Ganderbal, Srinagar, Kupwara , Budgam, Pulwama, Anantnag and Sophian districts. The speaking on the occasion, the Minister said WDC has been created for socio economic upliftment of women in the State. She said that the Corporation ensures welfare of women by creating an enabling environment for them and establishing income generating units, which serve the twin purpose of empowerment and employment. Sakina interacting with beneficiaries, enquired about the benefits being provided to them under various schemes by the Corporation. The beneficiaries expressed satisfaction over the activities and said that ever since they registered themselves in the Corporation, their life has changed a lot. The Minister said during the financial year 2008-09, under National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation scheme, JKWDC released an amount of Rs.292.00 lakhs in favour of 551 women beneficiaries as loan at an interest rate of 6% per annum. As regards recovery of loan is concerned, JKWDC recovered Rs. 104.67 lakhs from women loanees which is a major achievement for JKWDC. Managing Director, Dr. Naheed Soz informed that the Corporation has tried its best to involve the beneficiaries from all the districts and 67 women beneficiaries had exhibited their products through 30 different stalls. She also informed that the exhibitors have made sales worth Rs.1.16 lakh within two days.
