| Women’s group launches signature campaign for assertion of rights | | | Early Times Report
Jammu Nov 23: The Core Committee Members and activists of Mahila Sanrakshan Samiti (MSS), continued the ongoing ‘signature campaign’ at Purani Mandi area of old city.
Over 2400 people, particularly the females, put their signatures in support of the noble cause undertaken by samiti.
One of the core committee member Priya Sethi, on this occasion, while briefing the general public about the campaign, said that the law of the land permits any adult male or female to marry any one of his or her choice. Such an act is not a crime. She said a Jammu boy Rajneesh Sharma also did not any crime when he married a girl from Srinagar.
But the Srinagar police, in connivance with Jammu police, illegally kidnapped him from Jammu, locked in police station for days and brutally tortured which resulted into his custodial death. The Srinagar police killed a boy and the government yet has failed to take any action even after passage of one and half month. It has forced the samiti to launch signature campaign to build pressure so that the guilty police officers from Srinagar and Jammu are punished.
Speakers said that the samiti members are also submitting memorandums to the Jammu based ministers with requests that they should also come forward against the custodial killing of Rajneesh Sharma and declared that MSS will not take rest till the culprits are booked and punished.
Sushila Abrol and Shilpi Verma, who are also the core committee members, urged the people of Jammu region cutting across their political, social and religious affiliations, to come in support of the demand raised by samiti and ensure that no one in the future dares to act like the Srinagar police and kill any one. Usha Choudhary, Anuradha Charak and Vidya Devi also briefed the people about the signature campaign.
