| 1255 stranded passengers airlifted from Leh to Srinagar | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, November 24- Srinagar-Kargil road which got blocked due to snowfall on November 10, 2009 was thrown open today and 38 loaded trucks and 36 LMVs stranded at Sonamarg were allowed to move towards Drass. However, no traffic will be allowed to move on Zojilla Pass to avoid any untoward incident as the road is very slippery. The movement of vehicles from Sonamarg to Gumri was personally supervised by Qamar Ali Akhoon, Minister for CA&PD and Transport, DC Ganderbal, RTO Kashmir and SP Ganderbal. Many stranded passengers at Kargil-Leh and Srinagar who could not afford airfare of Indian Airline flight between Leh-Srinagar had requested Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah to make arrangements for their evacuation. Chief Minister took up the matter with the Ministry of Defence, Government of India and arranged special airforce flights between Leh and Srinagar for these poor stranded passengers. The passengers were carried in busses from Kargil to Leh by district administration, Kargil under the supervision of, Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Kargil and Mr. Kachoo Ahmad Ali Khan. As such, 1255 stranded passengers were airlifted from Leh to Srinagar and Srinagar to Leh. As many as 970 stranded passengers were airlifted in 4 sorties from Leh to Srinagar and 285 passengers from Srinagar to Leh in two sorties free of cost. The entire arrangements were supervised by Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Ms. Naseem Lankar. Arrangements at Leh were supervised by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Leh while at Srinagar Airport it was supervised by OSD with Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir. The stranded passengers were received at the Srinagar Airport by Director Airport Authority, SSP Airport. ARTO, Srinagar had made special arrangements of busses for ferrying the stranded passengers from Airport to the City
