Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 24- Saying that the current scenario in the sub continent demands that the people of Jammu and Kashmir lead the process of peace and resolution from the front, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed PDP Patron has reiterated that demilitarization of civilian areas and revocation of AFSPA was an essential prerequisite for any political process to proceed with seriousness and credibility. ‘The security forces had achieved their goals and it was in their own interest and that of peace in the region that they are relieved of the internal security burden and sent back to barracks’ he added..
Addressing a civil society seminar in Kupwara today on various aspects of self-rule, he said “the people of the state can no more be held hostage to strategic or political interests of the two countries, which have been fighting over it for six decades and causing tremendous miseries to us”.
Mufti said that the leadership of India and Pakistan must realize that the hostility between the two countries affects directly and adversely lives of the people here and failure to resolve the issue results in huge human cost. “Our struggle for justice has entered a crucial phase and I believe the people of the state will have to utilize the democratic space fully and proactively to carry the resolution process to its logical conclusion”, he said and added we will use all peaceful and democratic channels to achieve a dignified solution.
Referring to the shrillness that has marked recent statements emanating from New Delhi and Islamabad, Mufti cautioned against ignoring the overwhelming sentiment for peace that prevails here and was strengthened by earlier indications of dialogue. He said blowing hot and cold on the issue was anyway dangerous but the two sides need to understand its impact on a people who are alienated from the mainstream, facing colossal emotional and physical loss everyday and who have only recently staged a commendable transition to peaceful and democratic means of struggle which is unprecedented for any contemporary movement.
Referring to the Self Rule road map Mufti said it brings to the region a vision of a larger world that would be at peace with itself and the countries around. He said it would free the people of the state, especially those living in border areas, from the sense of siege that engulfed us as a result of partition. He said it was time for the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to deliver on his promise to convert borders into “just a line on the map” and not let the hawks to hijack his agenda of peace.
Stressing self reliance as essential to any self rule concept, Mufti said his party is clear on the subject of the resources that have been denied to the state in a totally unjust arrangement. He said river water is to J&K what oil is to Gulf but unfortunately it was signed away by successive National Conference governments leading the state to economic subjugation.
Others who addressed the seminar included Abdul Haq Nizam-Din Bhat MLAs and Fayaz Ahmed.
