| Prisons in all district in four years | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, NOV 25: Director General Prisons, Dr. Ashok Bhan today said that a three-pronged strategy has been adopted to streamline the functioning of prisons with focus on improving professional capacities of the Jail staff, imparting vocational training to the Jail inmates, decongesting Jails and ensuring speedy trials. Speaking at the concluding function of the two-day Jammu & Kashmir Prison Duty Meet at Central Jail, Kot-Bhalwal near here this evening, Dr. Bhan said that development of human resources to enhance professional competence of the Jailers is imperative for improving the functioning of prisons. For this purpose, he said various training courses are being organized in Police Academy periodically. He said the premier police research institution of the country, Bureau of Police Research and Development has hailed the J&K Prisons Department for its reforms and management and has even offered to conduct training courses for employees of various other Jails of the country adding that funds required for this purpose would be provided by the Bureau. The Financial Commissioner, Home, Mr. Samuel Verghees was Chief Guest on the occasion. Dr. Bhan said that various programmes are underway to impart vocational training to Jail inmates as per their capacities and capabilities to enable them lead a comfortable life after release. He said computer gaint DOEC has opened its extension centre in the Central Jail Kot-Bhalwal and Central Jail Srinagar where three months computer training courses are provided to the Jail inmates. Similarly, Department of Continuing/Extension Education has also been roped in to provide necessary education to the Jail inmates, Dr. Bhan added . Dr. Bhan said that the Government is opening prisons in every district of the State in next four years, to ease pressure on the existing jails and ensuring speedy trials. The move is aimed at decongesting the existing jails. He said the capacity of Hiranagar Jail has been increased three-folds from 25 to 75 persons which will ease congestion in Samba and Jammu Prisons. Similarly, a separate prison would be opened in Kupwara shortly where prisoners belonging to the area and lodged at Baramulla and Srinagar prisons would be shifted and their trials conducted. The former Director General Police, Mr. M. M. Khajuria, former Controller Prisons, Mr. T.R. Kalra, former Additional DG Prisons, Mr. A.C. Chutarvedi, former DIG Prisons, Mr. J. C. Kotwal, DIG, Jammu, Mr. Farooq Khan, DIG Prisons, Mr. Mohammad Sultan Lone, delegates of international committee of Red Cross, retired senior Jail officers, Jail inmates and employees of various prisons of the State were present at the function. The chief guest Mr. Verghees gave away prizes among the best performers of various events conducted during the two-day prison duty meet which mainly include essay and quiz competition and sports etc.
