Early Times Report
Jammu,Nobvember 25:-The National Conference leadership seems to have suffered erosion in its support base in New Delhi. This is indicated by the way the Haj delegation from Jammu and Kashmir had been selected. Majority of those included in the delegation either belong to the congress or have been recommended by the congress leaders, including the union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad. Even the PDP chief Ms Mehbooba Mufti has been included in the delegation.
National Conference sources today said that the party leadership had not been even asked if the NC leaders wanted to recommend names of some of their party men who could be included in the delegation. Reports said that the euphoria that had had risen when Omar Abdullah took over as the Chief Minister of the state seems to have suffered severe dilution. There is no personal reason for this. New Delhi is quite unhappy with the style of functioning of Omar Abdullah /the reasons for this, according to informed sources, are many. First being “poor governance.”Delhi has taken a note of the absence of the Chief Minister who has been traveling to different locations, especially Delhi. There was a stage when Omar Abdullah had not wait for an hour if he wanted to have a meeting with the UPA chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi or with the Prime Minister Manmohan Sngh. Sources said that Omar had to cool his heels while trying to seek an audience with Sonia Gandhi.
Another reason being his off the cuff remarks on various issues that have not gone well with Delhi. In this connection sources refer to his recent statement on the Kashmir issue wherein he said that Kashmir was a disputed territory. In his bid to outwit the PDP leadership Omar has been harping on withdrawal of troops from within the civilian areas and the repeal of the Armed Forces (special powers) Act. This too seems to have offended Delhi.
Informed sources said that even though the meetings of the district development boards had been completed over a month ago Omar Abdullah has not been able to galvanise the state machinery for accelerating the execution of various development projects. The centre has received a feedback indicating that the development activities had yet to pick up the pace and delay had already close the working season in areas which have been swept by snow, rain and subzero temperature.Besides this some of the senior congress leaders, including some ministers, had conveyed to the party high command that the Chief Minister was not taking them into confidence while taking some important decisions.
The growing differences between the father(Farooq Abdullah) and the son(Omar Abdullah) has become a source of worry for the centre. The Congress high command does not want to see the level of dissentions in the National Conference to grow beyond repair. In that case the Congress will have no other alternative but to forge alliance with the PDP again. It is in this context that the Prime Minister and the UPA chairperson continue to be warm towards Mufti Mohgd.Sayed and his daughter,Mehbooba. The Mufti is said to have met the Prime Minister and got the police to deal firmly with those who had tried to tamper with the evidence in Amandeep murder case.It was after a brief meeting Mehbooba Mufti had with the Prime Minister that her name was included in the Haj delegation.
These small development indicate that Omar Abdullah's graph has started showing a downward curve. And report from Delhi indicate that the Congress high command in general and UPA Government is not prepared to see the security and political situation in Jammu and Kashmir witnessing any further turmoil. This report also indicates that if Delhi came to believe that Omar cannot deliver the goods it may experiment with the installation of Farooq Abdullah as the Chief Minister.(
