Early Times Report

Jammu,November 26:-For people in Pakistan sugar, these days, is bitter .Pakistan has ben bitten by sugar crisis of the magnitude that was wsitnessed by people in 2005.And against the usual price of Rs.40 a kg it sells at Rs.70 to Rs.80 a kg.For days together sugar has remained unavailable in the market.Retailrs blame the wholesalers and the wholesalers accuse the sugar mill owners of resorting to hoarding and inflation, according to reports received from across the border.

These reports said that sugar and politics in Pakistan are linked because 50 per cent of the 78 sugar mills in Pakistan are owned by politicians, belonging to both the opposition and the ruling alliance.Since the sugar trade is in the hands of influential politicians its prices have continued to fluctuate from one extreme to the other wherher the country is under the military dictatorship or under the civilian regime.

Hike in sugar prices have pushed up the prices of confenctionary items, including pastries and cakes. And the politicians belonging to the ruling party or parties,in an attempt at impressing people,go in for import of sugar for a few days. The imported sugar is purchased by people at a higher rates. When the Government receives the feedback indicating the people are unhappy over the high prices of imported sugar the mill owners receive hints on releasing fresh quota of sugar which is sold at a premium.

Since the industrial structure in Pakistan is quite weak when compared to India poliicians in Pakistan try to seek as much advanatge from the sugar mills they own because Pakistan has a rich potential for sugar manufacture.Pakistan is one among the top five sugar producing countries in the world.Experts say that with good sugar production there should be no reason and justification for sugar shortage in Pakistan. These experts say shortage is the result artificial scarcity created by the political leaders who own maximum number of sugar mills.

Some of these politicians, who own a number of sugar mills, receive Government patronage for exporting sugar to some neighbouring countries which allows politcian to reap rich harvest.According to these experts sugar crisis will intermittenly hiot pakistan so long sugar mills are owned by politicians who provide patronage to ot her manufacturers to create artificial scarcity in order to earn fortunes from blackmarketing.(
