11/29/2009 8:48:26 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, NOV 28: Controller Drug and Food Jammu and Kashmir has hit upon a novel idea to curb anti-Tobacco Law violations and has found a unique way to spread awareness among masses about the anti-Tobacco laws and regulations.

‘Smoking Kills Tobacco Kills Tobacco Causes Cancer’ is the very first SMS which darted the most of the cell phones on November 24 at late afternoon under this public awareness campaign initiated by the concerned department.

The said department is sending SMSs to all the cell phone holders about the awakenings about the ill effects of tobacco, Satish Gupta Controller Drug and Food Jammu and Kashmir said, “With the active support of cellular operators, we have sent SMSs to all the cell-phone holders under this anti-tobacco campaign. The aim behind this is to educate people about the ill effects of tobacco.

“Everyone keeps checking the cell-phone throughout the day and I hope many people might have read our SMS carefully and would act upon the advice,” and thus sending SMS to the public is a part of an aggressive anti-tobacco campaign,’ he said.

When asked if it is not a trespassing into one’s personal life as tobacco users once said we have never objected to eating of rice or mutton by others, he simply said rice and mutton don’t have ill effect on the health of others as compared to the smoke as is the case with tobacco that does not spare the man sitting besides a smoker.
“Approximately 9 lakh people die every year because of cancer in India and over 40 percent of the cancer among the victims is caused due to the use of tobacco, he said and adding further he underlined that about 54 lakh deaths occur due to cancer globally.

Satish Gupta said under this anti-tobacco campaign by the department 143 persons were booked violating Tobacco Act i.e. under Section 4 (Prohibition of Smoking in Public places of Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act, 2003).

According to the Controller, Drugs & Food Control Organisation, J&K, nine establishments found selling Cigarettes and other tobacco products to the minors, were also booked under section 6(a) of the Act and the campaign is on to discourage the use of tobacco. Giving details Controller Mr Gupta also said that teams also challened those cigarette vendors who were found within a radius of 100 yards of educational institutions selling cigarettes and other tobacco products during the month of October.

Talking about anti-tobacco drive, Gupta said a meeting was held in this regard in the directorate and food inspectors who are the nodal officers for the movement against tobacco were instructed for creating awareness among general masses on the harmful effects of smoking in public and the effects of tobacco products and cigarettes on minors.
