Pak fears enemy from within, builds bunkers to ward off Taliban attack: BSF DG

Early Times Report
NEW DELHI/JAMMU, NOV 28: The Border Security Force said here today that Pakistani Rangers are building bunkers along the border which are very "defensive" in nature and could be aimed at preventing attacks from within its own territory though Pak Rangers have a different take on things. Both BSF and rangers face each other at borders in Jammu and Kashmir and their interaction today at the frontiers to mark Eid has turned out to be significant.

In New Delhi BSF Director General Raman Srivastava disclosed to reporters of a strange and unusual activity on the Pakistan’s side of the borders in Jammu and Kashmir. He said, "We have come across certain construction activities across the border. In some of the instances the bunkers being constructed are facing their own territory."

He said it looks that building such defensive bunkers could be a preventive measure in case of attacks on its border posts by the Taliban or other militants.

Asked about the performance of the force’s recently raised women’s wing, which has been posted for frisking duties along the border, Srivastava said he was "extremely happy".

Srivastava said during his interaction with the women constables, they had asked him to depute them at the border and also make them a part of the anti-Naxal operations.

He said discussions are on to see what other duties can be given to the women personnel.

About infiltration bids by militants from across the border, he said there are various launching pads where they are waiting to infiltrate.

He said the force is expecting a surge in infiltration as the snowfall increases, because at times even the fence comes under the snow.

"We have increased our patrolling and are fully prepared to check any infiltration attempts," he said.

Meanwhile in Jammu, refusing to admit their direct role in the frequent incidents of ceasefire violations wing commander of 2nd Chenab Rangers Zulfikar Ali on Saturday blamed Indian border security force jawans for failing to check infiltration despite raising barbed wire fencing along the International border.

A group of Pak Rangers led by Zulfikar Ali earlier crossed zero line to greet their Indian counterparts on the occasion of Eid celebrations and instead of sharing lighter moments the Pak ranger used the opportunity to blame the BSF jawans for laxity leading to frequent incidents of border crossing.

"There is no question of violating ceasefire. We never do that. On the contrary it is your force which has failed to check infiltration", Pak Rangers’ officer said in his interaction with his BSF top brass at the borders adding despite raising border fencing your jawans have failed to check infiltration.

He said we have issued strict orders to our jawans to maintain a strict vigil on the border and shoot anyone crossing from that area.

Dealing with another question of planting IED near the International border which resulted in the death of DIG BSF OP Tanwar, the Pak ranger, who appeared unrepentant, said Pakistan had no role in it. He said a very high level inquiry was ordered at our end after BSF lodged a strong protest. During the inquiry a statement was issued by the Hizbul Mujahideen which claimed that they were responsible for carrying out the strike.
