All steps being taken to check price rise of food: Pranab

New Delhi, Dec 1
The Government is taking all possible steps to check price rise of food items, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.
''All necessary steps are being taken to check the rise in the prices of essential food items which is a matter of concern for everybody,'' Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said during Question Hour.
The Minister said the rise in the prices was not due to demand-push inflation, but following shortage of certain essential commodities.
''For example, there is a shortage of pulses to the tune of 3.6 million tonnes and this cannot be met through imports as the countries that produce pulses do not have enough surplus to be able to export the commodity. It is this scarcity that is pushing up the prices,'' Mr Mukherjee said.
