Unfair exploitation of state’s water and power add insult to injury: PDP
12/1/2009 10:52:51 PM

Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec1
Reiterating its call for ending the unfair exploitation of state’s water and power resources by NHPC the Peoples Democratic Party has said the centre’s latest firmaan of keeping large projects for itself and leaving crumbs for the state was unacceptable to the people of state.
In a statement issued here today a spokesman of the party said the newest arrangement announced by union government officials “allotting” mini hydel projects to the state while earmarking all major projects for the NHPC was like adding insult to injury.
He said the “vast power potential” referred repeatedly to in the government statement on the subject sounded like a cruel joke as these had become a taboo for the people of the state who were literally consigned to darkness. The micro hydel projects constructed under the Prime Minister’s reconstruction program he said had all failed without a single exception all over the state.
Referring to the party’s stand on water resources the spokesman said it is the belief of the party that the state should get back the control over this most vital resource for its economic self reliance, employment of its people and dignified existence as a political entity within the union. He said the centre should implement the Rangarajan Committee forthwith and return the Dulhasti, Salal and Uri power projects to the state to infuse an element of credibility to its efforts aiming at finding a solution to Kashmir issue.
He said while on the one hand the state had reported a sharp decrease in power revenue on the other even metered areas had been subjected to scheduled and random load shedding. For the people living in metered areas it was a betrayal by the government which had promised uninterrupted power supply while seeking their cooperation in installation of meters. The rural areas, the spokesman said were facing even worse situation as the electricity was denied to them for days on end.
