| Earmarking major projects for NHPC is an insult to injury: PDP | | | Srinagar, Dec 1 : Reiterating its call for ending the unfair exploitation of Jammu and Kashmir's water and power resources by the NHPC, the PDP today said the Centre's latest directive of keeping large projects for itself and leaving crumbs for the state was unacceptable to people of the state. In a statement issued here,a spokesman for the PDP said the latest arrangement announced by the Centre ''allotting'' mini hydel projects to the state, while earmarking all major projects for the NHPC was like adding insult to injury.
He said the ''vast power potential'' repeatedly referred in the Government statement on the subject sounded like a cruel joke as these had become a taboo for the people of the state, who were literally consigned to darkness.
The micro hydel projects constructed under the Prime Minister’s Reconstruction Programme had all failed without a single exception all over the state.
The Spokesman said it was unprecedented that at the height of the power crisis in the state the government should indulge in such exercises that were patently humiliating for the people here.
On one hand, power failure was driving the people to the streets to demonstrate and on the other an insensitive message was sent out that more and more water resources were being handed over to the Centre without responding to the current crisis.
He said this was a sure recipe for increasing the levels of alienation.
