| Hockey tourney gets underway | | Indoor Sports complexes at Jammu, Srinagar to get facelift-Chib | |
Early Times Report Jammu Dec 1- Minister for Medical Education, Technical Education, Youth Services and Sports, Mr. R.S. Chib today called upon the youth of the State to take up sports in a big way, as it sharpens the physical and mental faculties of a person.
“Participation in games help in building alertness of mind along with fitness of body” he said and added that the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie fostered by games enables a person to face stiff completions of the present day world with greater confidence.
Speaking after inaugurating North Zone Inter-University Hockey Tournament at K. K. Hakku Stadium here today, Mr. Chib said that the Government is focusing on upgradation of sports infrastructure in the State, especially, in the far-flung and rural pockets, so that youth get adequate opportunity to excel in sports. He said that Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah is taking personal interest in the development of sports infrastructure and has allotted sufficient funds for development of playfields in the rural areas during the recently held District Development Board meetings.
Recalling his earlier association with promotion of sports, the Minister said astro-turf for hockey was first introduced in the State when he was Chairman of Indira Gandhi Gold Cup hockey tournament in 1987, 88 and 89. He also recalled the efforts of Mr. K. K. Hakku, in whose name the stadium has been built, in popularizing sports in J&K besides the keen interest shown by former Chief Minister, Dr. Farooq Abdullah due to which K. K. Hakku stadium could become a reality.
Lauding the role of Army in promoting sports in the State, Mr. Chib said that under operation Sadbhavana a number of playfields have been developed. He announced that indoor sports complexes at Jammu and Srinagar will be given a facelift with state-of-art infrastructure, so that J&K can host national and international sports events, thereby giving an ideal platform to the budding sportspersons of the State to compete with top level sportspersons.
As many as, 22 teams from North India are participating in the seven-day North Zone Inter-University Tournament, being organized by University of Jammu.
On the occasion, sports contingents drawn from different universities of the country held a march past.
