Centre continues to repose trust in Mufti Sayeed who is to head unofficial delegation to the UN.
10/5/2006 10:37:14 PM

Srinagar,October 5 :- By deputing Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, patron of the ruling PDP and a former Chief Minister, to lead an unofficial Indian delegation to the UN General Assembly, is a clear indication that the Government of India continues to trust the skills of the Mufti for carrying out back channel diplomacy for settling the Kashmir issue.
The Mufti is scheduled to leave for New York as head of the unofficial Indian delegation on October 29.Those who had thought of a rupture in the relations between the Congress and the PDP were mistaken as the AICC leadership, especially Ms Sonia Gandhi, are opposed to those in the Congress who want ties with the PDP to be snapped. This became evident when the Government of India chose the Mufti to head the delegation in which Rahul Gandhi is also a member.
It is for the second time that the Congress high command has reposed trust in the Mufti. First, the Congress high command stood by him when Chief Minister,Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, refused to accept the PDP recommendations for changing the portfolio of Muzaffar Hussain Baig and then seeking his recall from the council of ministers.

And to the disappointment of the BJP and the National Conference Prime Minister,Dr Manmohan Singh, has announced his willingness to discuss self-rule idea floated by the PDP and the restoration of greater autonomy by the National Conference. While the BJP is opposed to both the ideas and National Conference leadership is engaged in ridiculing the PDP on the raising of self-rule slogan.
What seems to surprise the critics of Mufti Sayeed is the way the Government of India selected him to head the Indian delegation when he plans to circulate the party’s document on the self-rule among the members of the UN General Assembly and other members of the American think-tank on the sidelines of the session..
Reports suggested that Chief Minister,Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, had campaigned against Mufti Sayeed being sent as head of the Indian delegation to New York on the plea that his (Mufti’s) demand fort self-rule in Jammu and Kashmir could cause embarrassment for the Government of India. However, both the congress high command and the Union Government are said to have ignored Azad’s suggestion and selected the Mufti to head the Indian delegation without receiving a request from the PDP patron.
