| Balwant Thakur honored by Punjab Naatshalla | | | Early Times Report Jammu , Dec 2 The Punjab Naatshalla and Manch-Rangmanch, Amritsar honored Balwant Thakur, Director of Natrang for the outstanding performance of the Dogri play ‘Ghumayee’ in the 6th National Theatre festival held at Punjab Naatshalla Amritsar. Punjab Naatshalla is a unique National Centre for theatre which has its own campus, housing an auditorium with ultra modern theatre facilities. Interestingly this is the only NGO initiative in the country which provides theatre and other logistic support to the theatre groups without any charges for the promotion of theatre. The honor to Balwant Thakur was presented by Mr. Jatinder Barar, the founder of Naatshalla on the concluding day of the National Theatre festival. Natrang’s Ghumayee turned out to be the most outstanding presentation of the festival which was dedicated to the legendary theatre personality Habib Tanveer. The other plays which featured in the festival included Shakespeare’s ‘King Lear’ directed by Kewal Dhaliwal, ‘Chanda Mama Door Ke’, directed by M.K. Raina, ‘Ghar Vaapsi Ka Geet’ directed by Probir Ghua, ‘Ayodhya Babu Sanak Gaye’ directed by Devinder Raj Ankur, ‘Yatra’ directed by Bahrul Islam, and ‘Mahaveer’ directed by Partho Bandopadhyae.
In this festival Natrang also achieved yet another distinction for being the first group of the country which made it to the four National festivals out of six held in Amritsar. The earlier plays of Natrang which featured in the festival included ‘Mahabhoj’, ‘Bawa Jitto’ and ‘Aap Hamare Hain Kaun’.
With the participation and presentation in this festival, Balwant Thakur created a history for being the only theatre director of the country who crossed the mark of two hundred National Theatre festivals as a theatre director. Now a stage has come that no National theatre festival in the country is held without the participation of Natrang Jammu. It has been possible only after giving successive best of the performances one after the other and creating a brand name and the demand for the group. The recent participation of Natrang in six International Theatre festivals has also generated a fresh demand for Natrang plays in all over the country and abroad.
