| Strengthening baseline democratic units imperative for development: Sagar | | | Early Times Report Jammu, December 02 –The Minister for Rural Development, Panchayats, Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Ali Mohammad Sagar today said that the Government is committed to hold the Panchayati elections in the State soon so that the democratic institutions at the grass root level are strengthened.
The Minister was addressing a meeting held today to deliberate on the Panchayati Raj Act. The meeting was attended by several Legislators which include Mr. Vijay Bakaya, Mr. Abdul Rehman Veeri, Mir Saifullah besides Commissioner/Secretary Rural Development, Mr. Umang Narula, Secretary Law, Mr. G.H. Tantray and other senior officers.
The Minister said that the Government is committed to provide good and effective governance to the people that too at the grass root level and holding of Panchayati Elections would lead to enhanced the participation of the people living in rural areas in the policy implementation as well as oversee the various developmental process undertaken by the Government. He said that the basic idea is to improve the functioning of the Government at the base level and also get effective feedback about the same.
Mr. Sagar said that by empowering Panchayats various flagships schemes of the Centre as well as the State would also get a fillip. He said that it would also ensure the proper utilization of funds meant for the development of the rural and far flung areas of the state.
The legislators, while interacting put forth several suggestions regarding the strengthening of the Panchayti institution of the State.
