| Five crore person-days to be created in next five years | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 2 The state Government plans to generate five crore person-days during the next five years so that more people were covered under National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). The scheme had been started in Jammu and Kashmir in 2005 and it had received appreciation from the central Government. Till date 4.98 lakh rural households have been registered and employment equivalent to 80 lakh person-days has been generated under the scheme. Over 1.70 lakh bank accounts have been opened so far so that payments of wages were made through banks. This procedure had been adopted to avoid pilfers appropriation and minimize the role of touts who would not allow full payment to be made to the workers. Official sources said that Rs.87 crores had been utilized under the scheme last year. And when the Government completes the task of creating five crore person-days the Government would be utilizing Rs.800 crores on the scheme. Sources said that once five lakh man-days were created it could reduce the level of poverty and unemployment in the rural belts of the state. In order to help the rural youth to seek gainful employment the Government has already enhanced the existing wage rate under NREGS from Rs.70 per day to Rs.110 per day. This wage hike is likely to encourage more people in the rural areas to get covered under the NREGS.Once this happened the Government would be able to utilise all the available funds under the scheme.
