| Formulate ‘state forest policy’ demands ICELA | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 2: The Indian council for environ-legal action (ICELA) J&K Chapter, convenor Ashok Sharma urged upon the chief minister Omar Abdullah and forests and environment minister Mian Altaf to formulate “state forest policy” in furtherance of national forest policy of 1988 to halt further degradation of environment and denudation of forest in the state. This he said during a meeting of eco-volunteers on the occasion of national pollution prevention day held here. He also demanded declaration of J&K as ecologically fergile state besides according status of world heritage townships of Jammu, Srinagar and Katra to make these cities pollution free and healthy living places. The meeting expressed serious concern over the traffic and industrial pollution increase at alarming rate without any check inspite of sufficient laws and infrastructure available and pleaded for smooth traffic management, introduction of red light signal system and CNG, re-location of industrial units including brick killens and saw mills by shifting them from the residential to identified areas. The meeting also remembered those who lost their lives, limbs and subjected to disease during Bhopal Gas lead tragedy and requested one and all to shun greed and fight against those engaged in pollution and green felling to control such happenings in future. The meet also appreciated the step of government banning polythene use in the state. Among those who spoke included Ch. Vidya Sagar, JD Singh, Dr. BB Raina, Naresh Sharma, Lal Chand and Kailash Nath.
