| Private sector to be roped in for improving medicare in State: Sham | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, DECEMBER 03 –Minister for Health, Horticulture & Floriculture, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma has said that Government will encourage private entrepreneurs in the health sector, adding that Government has already constituted a task-force under the chairmanship of Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah with SKIMS founder Director, Dr. Nagpal as its convener to suggest measures to improve medicare in the State.
Speaking at a function organized by Bee Enn Charitable Hospital and Community Care Centre in connection with the World AIDS Day here today, the Minister said that private participation is being roped in a big way to bring both qualitative and quantitative improvement in delivery of health services.
To further streamline the functioning of the Health Department, the Minister said that Government will soon be introducing a Drug Policy with an aim to streamline the procurement of drugs. He said that a Nursing Act will also be enacted to define the powers and the duties of nurses, one of the prime constituents of para-medics. He said that the endeavour of the Government is to strengthen all the wings related with Health and Medical Education.
Lauding the role of the Bee Enn Charitable Society in the field of healthcare, the Minister said that the Society is engaged in serving the mankind for the last many years thereby supplementing the efforts of the Government. He conveyed his gratitude to the Society for caring for AIDS patients and said that J&K AIDS Control and Prevention Society will provide all necessary support to the Hospital for treating HIV positive cases. He said that Government will explore possibilities to establish rehabilitation centres for AIDS patients along with facilities for counseling and treatment of the patients who are generally ignored by the society about the disease, he added.
Expressing concern over the increase in the number of AIDS positive cases in the State, the Minister said that there is serious need to educate the society about the causes of the disease to check its spread. He called for launching vigorous awareness campaign through print and electronic media, debates and other means with the involvements of NGOs, religious institutions, educational institutions to control AIDS. He also suggested introduction of sex education at school level to educate adolescents who are the most vulnerable section of the society, said Mr. Sharma.
Stressing on strict enforcement of ban on sex determination, the Minister said that the present trend of skewed sex ratio is an eye opener and we have to take stern measures to deal with the defaulters. He asked the concerned agencies to keep a close vigil on the situation and deal with the culprits sternly.
Earlier, the Minister paid a visit to Bee Enn Community Care Center where HIV positive patients are given counseling and treatment. The Centre is providing medicines, food and other facilities to the AIDS patients free of cost. Funds to meet expenses for medicines and other infrastructural support are being provided by the J&K AIDS Control and Prevention Society. He interacted with the patients and distributed sweets and other essentials among them.
He gave away prizes to the students of various Nursing Schools who excelled in the debate, held on the theme of a Role of Nurses in prevention of AIDS.
Chairman of the Bee Enn Charitable Hospital, Mr. Kunil Bhalla felicitated the Minister and highlighted the activities of the Hospital.
Project Director, J&K AIDS Control and Prevention Society, Dr. M.A.Wani also addressed the gathering and apprised about the steps taken by the Society to prevent further spread of AIDS.
Director, Family Welfare and RCH, Dr. Kulbushan Pandotra, doctors, staff of Bee Enn Charitable Hospital, staff of AID Control Society and a large number of students and teachers of various Nursing schools of Jammu were present on the occasion.
