Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 4: It’s been three months since the Governor, N N Vohra had given his nod to a five-member selection committee to choose the successor of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) Vice Chancellor Prof N K Bansal, who completed his term last month, but till date the suspense continues over the matter and the University is waiting to get its new boss.
According to highly placed sources in the Governor House, the selection committee recently submitted the panel of short-listed candidates to the Governor, who is the Chancellor of the University. A total of five persons have been recommended by the selection committee of which, His Excellency would finalize the most suitable one as the next Vice Chancellor of SMVDU, which has emerged as centre of excellence over the past few years owing to its high standard of academics and research.
As per sources, among those who have been short-listed for the SMVDU top post included a former top bureaucrat of the State, a retired IFS officer, a University of Jammu (JU) professor, and two others from outside the State. It is expected that within a week, the Chancellor’s office will make an announcement in this regard.
Earlier, in the first phase, the selection committee had short-listed 20 CVs/ Profiles from across the country that included professors from IITs, IIMs, JU and other prestigious institutions. But, in the subsequent stage, the number gets reduced to five. It is widely believed that the former top bureaucrat has the maximum chances of selection, as he enjoys proximity to His Excellency. Whereas, the other contenders are in a weak position in comparison to the top bureaucrat, sources maintained.
Meanwhile, the process for the appointment of the Vice Chancellor of newly announced Central University of Jammu has also been initiated, which has also set in motion a high motion drama, as the professors from JU, both retired and in service, are vying for the position.
