| Viral hepatitis ‘B’ a dreaded disease, but curable, says Dr. Chandail | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 5: The viral Hepatitis B disease can be of either in acute form or in chronic form. The acute viral hepatitis gets resolved in 99% of the adults with in 6 months period. But 1% of patients may develop chronic viral hepatitis B and these patients over a period of time may develop liver cirrohsis said Dr. Vijant Singh Chandail at a press conference here today. He said a number of cases of viral hepatitis B are also seen at Jammu and patients of chronic viral hepatitis B are being treated here also with all the drugs recommended for that like lamivudine, adefovir, tenofovir, entecavir, telbivudine and interferons depending upon the patient’s condition. The treatment is recommended for a period of approximately 2 years. The patients once treated rarely develop liver cirrhosis and its complications like ascites, GI Bleed, encephalopathy, hepatorenal syndrome and jaundice. The major emphasis was laid on early detection of such cases by undergoing simple screening tests so that they can be detected early and also emphasized were the modes of transmission of the disease from one patients to the other like from the infected needles of the Hepatitis B positive patients, blood transfusion from the infected patient, sexual contacts with the positive patients, from the infected mothers to their babies.
