12/6/2009 12:30:38 AM
Early Times Report
New Delhi, Dec 5: The manager of the Jammu and Kashmir handicrafts emporium here has been arrested for trying to sell three Shahtoosh shawls made from the wool of a threatened Tibetan antelope.
'Mushtaq Ahmed was arrested Thursday for possessing these shawls. He has been sent to judicial custody,' a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) spokesman said here.
The Kashmir emporium is located on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, along with similar outlets of other state governments. CBI sleuths raided the premises and recovered the shawls, which are manufactured with the wool of the 'Chiru' Tibetan antelope, a protected animal. The use of this wool is not permitted under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
Shahtoosh shawls provide warmth even in extreme cold and their price ranges from Rs. 150,000 to Rs.250,000.
