| Maneka Gandhi’s letter on Charcoal Bhatties treated as PLI | | | Jammu, October, 06- In a much publicized Public Interest Litigation, which was initiated on a letter written by Mrs. Maneka Gandhi, Ex-Union Minister and Environmentalist against the Charcoal Bhatties, Division Bench of J&K High Court Jammu Wing comprising Chief Justice BA Khan and Justice Mansoor Ahmed Mir directed Deputy Commissioners Poonch and Rajouri Districts to submit their reports regarding the closure of Charcoal Bhatties in their respective jurisdictions While issuing directions, the Division Bench observed that by order June 7, 2006 Deputy Commissioners of Rajouri and Poonch Districts were directed to file their status-reports of the existence of any charcoal bhatties in their respective districts. They have filed no such compliance reports. The only report filed by Pollution Control Board, refers to the report of Principal Chief Conservator of Forests to show that Charcoal Bhatties in Districts of Poonch and Rajouri have either been dismantled or closed. With these observations, the DB directed Registrar Judicial that he shall issue notice asking them for filling of the reports, failing which they would be required to appear before the Court in person. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests is also directed to submit a final report on the subject matter and four weeks time is allowed. JNF
