| J&K registers highest employment growth rate | | | JAMMU | OCT 6 Despite unfavouable situation, Jammu and Kashmir has registered highest employment growth in the country between 1998 and 2004. According to an Economic Census rate Jammu and Kashmir had registered an increase of 6.82 per cent in total employment growth followed by Sikkim (5.52%), Kerela(5.39%), Haryana(5.12%) and Tripura (5.07%), and official handout issued by government said. It added while Tamil Naidu topped with highest number of industrial units, Mizoram clocked the highest growth in enterprises at 9.60% followed by Kerala, Tripura, Tamil Naidu and Assam. According to the Census document, rural India is far more enterprising than urban areas, as it accounts for 61.3% of the country’s industrial units compared to just 38.7% in town and cities. Even in average annual growth in employment, rural areas fared better than urban areas with 33.3% and 1.68%, respectively. The share of urban and rural area in total employment is 49% and 51% respectively. The first Economic Census was done in 1977 and the fourth census in 1998. unlike previous Census, the fifth Census would have a directory of enterprise employing 10 workers or more to help undertake a detailed surveys in respect of services sector which contributes 54% to GDP.
