| Taken for ride by coalition partner NC, | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 7: Dissidents in the Congress have preferred to lie low after Sonia Gandhi conveyed to a couple of them, who had met her in Delhi recently, that in case they did not fall in line the party high command would be forced to take some disciplinary action against them. Party insiders said that after a ministerial team, including some sitting and former legislators, met Sonia Gandhi to convey to her the negative impact on the party by the activities of the dissidents the party high command had discussed the issue with the Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad. These reports said that Azad, who actually heads the dissident camp, has been politely told to bridle the dissidents failing which action could be initiated against them. These reports said that after the return of the ministerial team from Delhi to Jammu some of the dissidents, including G.M.Saroori, had rushed to the union capital where they had a meeting with the senior functionaries of the Congress party. The dissidents wanted to water down the campaign which the loyalists had launched against them but the party high command accepted the pleas of the loyalists which forced the dissidents to be on the defensive. One senior Congress leader on anonymity said that after the dissidents were told to stop their anti-party activities and the effect was seen instantly when the loyalists and the dissidents were seen together on a platform. In the recent past Tara Chand has been seen organising parallel functions where Ghulam Nabi Azad remains the chief guest. The loyalists had conveyed to Sonia Gandhi that the activities of the dissidents had encouraged the National Conference leadership, including the Chief Minister, to take the Congress for a ride. They had told the AICC Chief that in several matters of public importance and interest the National Conference leadership did not deem it proper to consult the congress after Ghulam Nabi Azad and Farooq Abdullah had joined hands against Saif-ud-Din Soz,PCC Chief. Though the loyalists had suggested to the party high command to initiate disciplinary action against some of the dissidents the AICC functionaries opposed strong steps on the plea that those expelled from the party could be lured either by the National Conference or by the PDP which could lead to some erosion in the congress base in the state.
