| Sham says Rs 6.83 Cr being spent on herbal cultivation | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, DEC 8: In view of growing market demand for Ayurvedic and Unani medicines, the Government will develop medicinal plants industry in a big way in the State. An amount of Rs. 6.83 crore will be spent during the current fiscal for the purpose. This was stated by the Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture while addressing farmers at a one-day Workshop-cum-Seminar on Medicinal Plants, held here today. The Minister said that people are shifting from Allopathic to Ayurvedic and Unani medicines, increasing thereby the demand for traditional drugs manifold. Keeping in view the growing need of these drugs in the market, the Government has decided to develop the AYUSH in a big way. He said that Jammu and Kashmir has great scope for the development of medicinal plants and all out efforts will be made to tap the potential fully. Mr. Sharma impressed upon the farmers to cultivate the medicinal plants for which the Government will provide them all necessary assistance. He said that Central Government has sanctioned National Mission on Medicinal Plants in 2008 under the Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. “The National Mission is implemented through Department of Horticulture and Floriculture in Jammu and Kashmir with the technical support of Department of Indian System of Medicines (ISM)”, he said. The Mission provides various incentives in its different components including plant production, area expansion, marketing and processing facilities etc. He asked the farmers to come forward and take benefits of this Centrally Sponsored Scheme for improving their socio-economic conditions. The Minister urged the Departments of Horticulture and Floriculture to create massive awareness among the farmers by organzing frequent Awareness Camps at different places so that more and more farmers avail the benefits of the scheme. He also asked for arranging farmers’ trips to prosperous States producing herbal plants and products in larger quantity for generating interest in them. An eminent Scientist and Project Coordinator, Medicinal Plants, Government of India, Dr. Rajinder Gupta, who was specially invited to provide guidance to the farmers for cultivation of different species of medicinal plants, also addressed the gathering and shared his experience with them. Over 300 farmers, heads of various NGOs from different parts of Jammu division participated in the Workshop and shared their ideas with Dr. Rajinder and other officers of Horticulture and Floriculture Departments
