| | CM wants politicians out of sports bodies | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 8: At a function attended by a battery of politicians –all big and mighty –and a handful of sportspersons, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today called for de-politicisation of sports organizations. His words are certainly music to the ears of all sportspersons who have their associations and organizations headed by politicians, with rare exceptions. However, it has to be seen as how far the Chief Minister himself is able to go in taking interests of politicians out of wealthy and influential sports bodies. Underscoring the need of nurturing sports talent in the state to compete at national and international levels, Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah today announced special incentives for the outstanding sports personnel. “Government will award Rs.5 lakh to any sports person of the state who wins gold medal at the international level while gold medal winner at the national level will get Rs.3 lakh, silver medalist Rs.2 lakh and bronze medalist Rs.1 lakh”, he said. The Chief Minister was addressing the felicitation function hosted by J&K Judo Association in honour of Miss Nippu Jamwal, Asian Games Gold Medalist, here on Tuesday evening. Miss Nippu will also receive Rs. 5 lakh under the incentive announced by the Chief Minister. Calling for apolitical sports organizations, Chief Minister said that the prime concern of the sport bodies should be to encourage youth at all levels and in all sports to excel and bring laurels to the state. “We have great talent available in various categories of the sports and the need of hour is to nurture this talent in a proper manner and provide required infrastructure for all sports”, he said adding that government would provide all help and financial support in this regard. Mr. Omar said that while chairing recently held District Development Board Meetings, he observed that the development of sports infrastructure was the common demand from all MLAs and MLCs. “This indicates the degree of interests our youth posses in sports”, he added. He said besides cricket, football, hockey, other sports have to be equally focused to ensure equitable development of all sports and the talent available. Mr. Abdullah said that recognition for outstanding performance is imperative to induct interest and flourish the sports persons and the activities in this field. “Our young boys and girls are second to none in any field of life. If provided opportunity and environment they are certain to show the metal and scale new highs”, he said citing the example of Miss Nippu Jamwal who won the Gold Medal at Asian Judo Championship. Congratulating and blessing the young talent of the state, Mr. Omar said that sports persons should get inspiration from the meritorious achievements of Miss Nippu Jamwal in the field of Judo. “Our boys and girls can also show fantastic results if they devote towards sports seriously while following the academic activities equally”. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports, Mr. R. S. Chib expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for taking keen interest in the development of sports in Jammu and Kashmir. He said Youth Welfare and Sports department is concentrating on the development and growth of sports talent in the state and efforts are a foot to generate more and more interests of youth in different sports, by providing infrastructure facilities at all levels. The President Jammu and Kashmir Judo Association, M. A. Bhukhari gave resume of the activities of the Association in Jammu and Kashmir and welcomed the Chief Minister and other dignitaries present on the occasion. Vice President Olympic Association, S. Rangil Singh and Member, Organizing Committee, Dr. Ashutosh Sharma also spoke on the occasion. The function was attended by the Minister for Revenue, Mr. Raman Bhalla, Minister of State for PHE, Mr. Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisors to Chief Minister, Mr. Mubarak Gul and Mr. Devender Singh Rana, Legislators, Mr. Rachpal Singh, Aijaz Ahmed Jan, Ajay Sadhotra, NC Provincial President, Mr. Rattan Lal Gupta, General Secretary, J&K Judo Association, Mr. R. C. Thakur, former Ministers Mr. Abdul Rashid and Mr. Rampal, Political Activist S. Gurdeep Singh Sassan, sports personnel from the state and outside, and the family of Miss Nippu Jamwal.
